About

The public research institution Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) is located in Indiana County, Pennsylvania. A total of 9,009 students were enrolled at the university as of autumn 2021, including 7,044 undergraduate and 1,865 graduate students. The college is located 89 kilometres (55 miles) northeast of Pittsburgh. The Board of Governors of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education and a local council of trustees oversee its administration. In Punxsutawney, Northpointe, and Monroeville, IUP offers satellite campuses. The Middle States Commission on Higher Education has granted IUP accreditation.

Originally incorporated in 1871 by investors from Indiana County, Indiana Normal School was the inspiration behind IUP. The Normal School Act, approved on May 20, 1875, by the Pennsylvania General Assembly, authorised the establishment of the school. The statute required that all new normal schools be privately owned enterprises with no financial ties to the government. Only in the sense that they were to be recognised by the Commonwealth as "state" normal schools.

The institution began operations in 1875 in the style of the French École Normale. Only 225 pupils were enrolled. Every regular school activity took place in a single structure that also housed a lab school for model instruction. The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania acquired ownership and control of the facility in 1920. It was given the authority to award degrees in 1927 by the Pennsylvania General Assembly, when it changed its name to State Teachers College at Indiana. Indiana State College became the official name of the institution in 1959 as its goal grew. The organisation was given university status in 1965 and changed its name to Indiana University of Pennsylvania, or IUP.
