In Bowling Green, Ohio, there is a public research institution called Bowling Green State University (BGSU). The main academic and residential campus, which spans 1,338 acres (541.5 hectares), is located 15 miles (24 km) south of Toledo, Ohio. In the scientific and social sciences, education, the arts, business, health and wellness, humanities, and applied technologies, the university offers programmes and research facilities that are nationally renowned. As part of the Lowry Normal School Bill, which established two new normal schools in the state of Ohio, the institution received a charter as a normal school with a focus on teacher education and training in 1910. Over the course of its existence, the university has grown from a little rural normal school to a comprehensive public research institution. It belongs to Ohio's University System and is categorised as a "R2: Doctoral Universities - High Research Activity" institution.
Through its eight academic colleges, Bowling Green offers more than 200 undergraduate programmes in addition to master's and doctoral degrees in 2019. As of 2018, BGSU had over 19,000 students enrolled across its whole student body, with about 6,000 of them living on campus. BGSU Firelands, the university's satellite campus, is located 60 miles (97 km) east of the main campus in Huron, Ohio. Approximately 2,000 students attend classes at Firelands, and an additional 600 students take classes online, in addition to the majority of students who attend classes at BGSU's main campus. Ohio is the home state of almost 85% of Bowling Green's students.
With more than 300 student organisations, the university offers a comprehensive programme for student life. With the exception of ice hockey, where the university is a member of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association, the university has athletic teams known as the Bowling Green Falcons and competes at the NCAA Division I level (FBS for football). Annual events held on campus include State Fire School and the Dance Marathon, a student-run charity event.
