San Francisco State University is a public institution in San Francisco, also known as San Francisco State, SF State, and SFSU. The institution provides 118 distinct bachelor's degrees, 94 master's degrees, 5 doctorate degrees, and 26 teaching certificates across its six academic colleges as part of the 23-campus California State University system. The university was initially established in 1899 as a state-run normal school for the purpose of educating school teachers. In 1921, it was granted state college status, and in 1972, it was granted state university status. Less than two miles from the Pacific shore, in the southwest of the city, is where the 141-acre campus is situated. At the NCAA Division II level, San Francisco State had 12 varsity sports teams, the majority of which belonged to the California Collegiate Athletic Association.
