In Mankato, Minnesota, there is a public institution known as Minnesota State University, Mankato (MNSU, MSU, or Minnesota State). It is the second-largest institution in Minnesota and has more than 123,000 active alumni worldwide. It is referred to as the flagship college and is the second-oldest institution in the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system. The Second State Normal School was founded in 1858, and a decade later the Mankato Normal School was formally inaugurated. With an annual economic contribution to Minnesota of about $781 million, Minnesota State University, Mankato makes a major contribution to the regional and state economies.

More than 130 undergraduate programmes, more than 85 master's degrees, and four doctoral programmes are available at Minnesota State, which has seven colleges and institutions.

It houses the only aviation programme in Minnesota that is certified on a national, regional, and state level. There are 750 full-time faculty members serving students, resulting in a student to faculty ratio. In addition to the main campus, it also runs two satellite campuses, one in Owatonna and the other in the Twin Cities suburb of Edina. It offers bachelor's degrees online and at the Normandale Partnership Center in Bloomington via the College of Extended Learning.

In the Northern Sun College Conference, the Minnesota State Mavericks compete in 21 intercollegiate sports, the majority of which are played at the NCAA Division II level. Its Division I men's and women's ice hockey teams play in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) and Western Collegiate Hockey Association, respectively (WCHA).
