Allendale, Michigan's Grand Valley State Institution (GVSU, GV, or Grand Valley) is a public university. As Grand Valley State College, it was founded in 1960. On 1,322 acres (5.35 km2), about 12 miles (19 km) west of Grand Rapids, is where the school's main campus is located. Additionally, the institution has campuses in Holland and Grand Rapids as well as regional hubs in Battle Creek, Muskegon, Detroit, and Traverse City.

By the start of the fall 2021 academic year, GVSU had more than 24,000 students enrolled from all 83 counties in Michigan as well as many other states and foreign nations. It has almost 3,000 employees, including 1,780 academic personnel and 1,991 support staff. Alumni from the university come from all 50 states in the United States, Canada, and 25 other nations.

The Lakers, who represent GVSU in all 19 intercollegiate varsity sports, are NCAA Division II athletic teams who take part in the GLIAC. Since 2002, in 20 different sports, they have won the NCAA Division II National Championship.

The Grand Rapids area, Michigan's second-largest metropolitan area, needed a four-year institution, according to a 1958 study funded by the Michigan Legislature. A committee was established by local entrepreneur Bill Seidman to investigate the report and lead the planning and publicity for the establishment of such a facility.
The college was founded by the Michigan Legislature the following year.
