John Fletcher Hurst, a revered Methodist bishop who had aspirations of founding a school that would prepare future public workers, founded American University. Congress established AU in 1893, and since then, it has been known for its pioneering spirit. Women attended American University before they were allowed to vote. American University once housed 400 African Americans while Washington, DC was still segregated. We remain rooted in the values of our founders as we continue to be a leader for a changing world even as we gain in stature and reputation.
