To meet the needs of neighbourhood veterans who had served in World War II, Triple Cities College, the precursor to Binghamton University, opened its doors in 1946. The young institution was a division of Syracuse University and was first situated in Endicott, New York, five miles west of the current site.
In honour of Robert Harpur, a colonial educator, patriot, and pioneer who assisted in settling the region west of Binghamton, the college was merged into the State University of New York (SUNY) four years later and given the new name of Harpur College.
The campus relocated to Vestal across the Susquehanna River in 1961. Soon after being chosen as one of the four University Centers in the SUNY system that grant doctorates, Harpur College grew its student body and developed a reputation for excellence.
The academic standing, cutting-edge research and scholarship, and educational value of Binghamton University are all receiving more and more respect on a national level. Our neighbourhood and state partnerships for economic growth, as well as our service and educational outreach programmes, are all robust. We are well-positioned to expand on our position as a leader in higher education thanks to our expanding regional presence, which is highlighted by the development of our new Health Sciences Campus in Johnson City, New York, which is currently under planning.
State University of New York at Binghamton was the official name of the campus until 1992, when Binghamton University was chosen as the more casual moniker.
