This brief movie documentary honouring Drexel University's 125th anniversary showcases some of the most significant occasions, figures, and historical periods. Scott Gabriel Knowles, co-editor of the book "Building Drexel: The University and its City, 1891-2016," serves as the video's narrator.
Anthony J. Drexel, a philanthropist and financier from Philadelphia, started a heritage of innovation by founding Drexel University.

How Drexel University Has Expanded

Drexel started awarding the Bachelor of Science degree in 1914 after dividing its 18 departments into four schools after initially being a non-degree-granting university. The state of Pennsylvania gave Drexel permission to award the Master of Science degree in 1927 and the Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1965.

The institution's academic programmes and curricula have expanded to encompass 15 colleges and schools. In line with this development, Drexel has undergone two name changes: from Drexel Institute of Technology to Drexel University in 1936 and 1970, respectively. The institution's dedication to research and the range of its programmes are reflected in the title as it is now. The University is one of only two universities operating a law school that uses a cooperative style of teaching, and as part of its ongoing expansion, it became the first major research university to create a new law school in 25 years in 2006. In 2011, Drexel also forged a connection with The Academy of Natural Sciences, one of Philadelphia's most illustrious organisations.

The co-op programme is a cornerstone of Drexel's experiential education pedagogy. Through it, students replicate Anthony Drexel's practical instruction by alternating study sessions with full-time jobs in the business. This gives you a significant advantage when you start working and adds more perspective to your study outside of the classroom.

He envisioned a university with core ideals that still serve as its compass in the current period, one that was specially suited to the demands of a fast expanding industrial society and of the young people searching for their place in it. With the founding of the Drexel Institute of Art, Science, and Industry in 1891, his ambition became a reality.

Innovation in Education

It is hardly surprise that Drexel University has been at the forefront of higher education given the university's commitment to innovation. With more than 1,800 students receiving their own Macintosh 128Ks at a time when it was cutting-edge technology, Drexel became the first university in the United States to mandate all undergraduates to embrace the microcomputer for use in coursework in 1983. Due to its dedication to technology, Drexel was an obvious choice to operate the first totally wireless campus at a major university in the year 2000.

The fundamental purpose of Drexel has remained the same despite all the adjustments and development. Since its inception, the institution has been a privately run, nonsectarian, coeducational centre of higher learning that stands out for its dedication to empowering both men and women to succeed in their chosen professions. Just as Anthony Drexel desired, the school's significantly increased enrollment, campuses, and curriculum show a history of being responsive to social and individual needs.
