Chicago State Institution (CSU) is a public university in Chicago, Illinois, with a predominately black student body. It was a cutting-edge teaching college that was established in 1867 as the Cook County Normal School. The school eventually came under the jurisdiction of the Chicago Public Schools, becoming Chicago Teachers College (CTC). In 1949, CTC opened a branch campus that is now known as Northeastern Illinois University. The college was first funded by the State of Illinois in 1951; it came under its authority in 1965, becoming a comprehensive state college. Chicago State University was founded there in 1967. CSU is recognised by the Higher Learning Commission and a member of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund.
