In Maryville, Missouri, there is a public institution called Northwest Missouri State University (NW Missouri). There are roughly 8,505 students enrolled there. It was established in 1905 as a teachers college, and today it serves as the official Missouri State Arboretum. The campus was modelled after Forest Park at the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair. The school is run by Interim President Clarence Green under the direction of a Board of Regents nominated by the state.

For both men's and women's athletics, the Northwest Bearcats participate in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association and the National Collegiate Athletic Association (Division II).
