LEWIS UNIVERSITY COMMUNITY SCHOOLS CONSORTIUM, FAIRMONT, VVSD PARTNERSHIP RECEIVES $2.5 MILLION FROM THE DEPARTMENT OF ED
The Lewis University Community School Consortium has just received a $2,495,985 grant from the U.S. Department of Education. With the help of this Full-Service Community Schools grant, Lewis University, cooperating school districts, and over 20 community partner organisations will work together to offer local students and families comprehensive wraparound services that are trauma-sensitive and culturally appropriate.
A number of local community organisations, including Lewis University in Romeoville, Valley View School District 365U in Bolingbrook and Romeoville, Fairmont School District 89 in Lockport, and others, have joined forces to create LUCSC. In order to promote educational, social, health, and economic justice for kids and their families, the project adopts a comprehensive, university-assisted strategy to deepen and improve the trauma-responsive and restorative culture and climate within partner schools.
From improved procedures and regulations to meaningful involvement with students and families, the is supposed to revolutionise every element of the educational environment. At order to build trauma-responsive and restorative practises and cultures in three targeted community schools—Brooks Middle School (grades 6-8), Bolingbrook High School (grades 9–12), and Fairmont School—LUCSC partners will create a cohesive and systemic network (grades PreK-8). Within the five years of this initiative, it is anticipated that over 4,300 children, or 90% of the students at these three schools, will be impacted.
The university-wide initiative of faculty and staff from several departments and colleges will be led by Dr. Emily Shayman, Director of the LUCSC, Dr. Joanna Maravilla, Co-Director, and Laura Wilmarth Tyna, Co-Director. The Office of Community Engaged Learning (OCEL), the Gros Institute, the Center for Community Research and Education (CCRE), the College of Education and Social Sciences, the College of Nursing and Health Sciences, and the College of Aviation, Science and Technology are just a few of the internal university partners.
