About

At his inauguration in 1876, our university's first president, Daniel Coit Gilman, posed that query. What exactly is the purpose of this place? His response:

"The promotion of individual scholars and the encouragement of research, who by their excellence will progress the sciences they pursue and the community in which they live."

According to Gilman, a modern university needs to excel at both teaching and research because they are intertwined and success in one is dependent on success in the other. Additionally, he thought that by disseminating our knowledge and discoveries, we may improve the state of the world.

We haven't deviated from that aim in 145 years. This remains a haven for outstanding, aspirational scholars and a global leader in both teaching and research. In the humanities, social sciences, engineering, international studies, education, business, and the health professions, eminent professors serve as mentors to students. Since 1979, the exact same faculty members have helped the university's Applied Physics Laboratory and the university as a whole to lead the nation in federal funding for research and development.
