About

Since its inception in 1897, the university has evolved into a premier public research university as well as a nationally recognized Hispanic-serving institution. SDSU offers over 36,000 students the chance to engage in an academic program defined by direct interaction with instructors and an international concentration that prepares them for a global future each year.

SDSU is San Diego's oldest higher education school, located on Kumeyaay soil about 30 minutes north of the US-Mexico border. Our community is totally devoted to quality education, meaningful research, and service to our regional community as well as to individuals we assist across the state, nation, and internally.

We have a rich history and a bright future ahead of us, as evidenced by:

  • In 2020, a five-year strategic plan called "We Rise, We Defy: Transcending Boundaries, Changing Lives" was announced.
  • SDSU Mission Valley is a mixed-use, medium-density, transit-oriented development that will increase the university's instructional, research, entrepreneurial, and technology transfer initiatives.
  • SDSU Imperial Valley's border-connected growth has been injected with additional funding to deliver new programs and student services.
  • SDSU Global Campus expansion, which is increasing educational access to adult learners via the introduction of new degree programs.
  • Our campus's diversity is a source of pride for us. SDSU is known for its dedication to diversity, equity, and inclusion. The institution is famous for its military and veteran programs and is listed as a top college for LGBTQ students, with around 54 percent of students being of color.

SDSU has defied expectations and conquered obstacles for years, delivering academic excellence, student achievement, and pioneering research. We will continue to do so as we develop SDSU's new chapter of inclusive opportunity for more students, reinventing a university intended to prosper for many years to come, and having a greater effect on San Diego, our border area, and the world than ever before.
