About

In Normal, Illinois, there is a public institution called Illinois State University (ISU). The earliest public institution in Illinois was established in 1857 under the name Illinois State Normal University. According to the American Association of Colleges of Teacher Education, the university places a strong emphasis on teaching and is one of the top 10 institutions in the country for producing teachers. It is listed as belonging to the category "R2: Doctoral Universities - High Research Activity".

The university's athletic teams are referred to as the "Redbirds" in honour of the cardinal, the state bird, and are participants in the Missouri Valley Conference and Missouri Valley Football Conference.

In 1857, the same year that Illinois' first Board of Education met and two years after the state legislature passed the Free School Act, ISU was established as a teacher training institution. Judge and future Supreme Court Justice David Davis and local landowner and businessman Jesse W. Fell, whose friend Abraham Lincoln was the attorney the board of education employed to draught the legal documents to ensure the school's finance, were among its backers. Its original name, Illinois State Normal University, reflected the institution's principal function as a normal school.

In the beginning, classes were held in Major's Hall in downtown Bloomington, which had previously been the location of Lincoln's "Lost Speech." The school relocated to its current location in what was then the village of North Bloomington when Old Main was finished in 1860. North Bloomington was incorporated as "Normal" in 1865. The new community took the university's name as its own.

The institution's name was changed to Illinois State University at Normal on January 1, 1964, and then once more to the current Illinois State University in 1967.

The school's slogan, "Joyfully we Learn and Teach," has been modified to modern English from its original Middle English spelling of "&gladly wold he lerne and gladly teche," which was in keeping with its aim.
