Springfield, Missouri's Missouri State Institution (MSU or MO State), previously Southwest Missouri State University, is a public university. It was established in 1905 as the Fourth District Normal School, and as of the fall semester of 2021, it had 22,926 students enrolled, making it the state's second-largest university by enrollment. The university also runs a campus in West Plains, Missouri, where associate degrees are offered. Liaoning Normal University in China offers a bachelor's degree in business. In addition, the university has a Department of Defense and Strategic Studies department in Fairfax, Virginia, as well as a fruit research station in Mountain Grove, Missouri.

On 225 acres in the heart of Springfield, there are nearly 40 buildings on the main campus of Missouri State University. With South Holland and Kimbrough Avenues to the west, Cherry and Elm Streets to the north, and Grand Street to the south, National Avenue serves as the area's eastern boundary. Just to the east of the school is where you'll find the Rountree community. The campus is divided by the John Q. Hammons Parkway, which runs north and south.

The "Historic Quadrangle," which faces National Avenue, includes Carrington Hall (1908), Hill Hall (1923), Siceluff Hall (1927), Cheek Hall (1955), and Ellis Hall (1959). Pummill Hall (1957), Karls Hall (1958), and Craig Hall (1967), all of which located to the south of that region, house the Coger Theater and host an annual outdoor summer tent theatre event.

The Duane G. Meyer Library, built in 1980 and named for a former university president, is located in the heart of the campus. It has more than 877,000 books, 3,500 magazines and newspapers with past issues on microfilm, microfiche, and microcards, subscriptions to more than 3,500 publications, and full text electronic access to more than 20,000 periodicals. Additionally, the library has about 934,000 official papers from the federal, state, and UN governments. The Jane A. Meyer Carillon, one of only 164 such instruments in the United States, was added as part of the 2002 renovation and expansion of the Meyer Library. The five-level, multi-jet John Q. Hammons Fountain located in front of Meyer Library (named for the MSU alumnus and hotel developer).

The Meyer Library is bordered to the south and west by other significant academic buildings. These include Strong Hall (1988), Glass Hall (1988), Kemper Hall (1976), and Temple Hall (1971). (1998). Although student housing and recreational spaces take up the majority of the north side of the campus, Greenwood Laboratory School, a fully operational K–12 school, is also situated here.
