A public institution in Hayward, California is known as California State University, East Bay (Cal State East Bay, CSU East Bay, or CSUEB). 136 undergraduate and 60 post-baccalaureate areas of study are available at the institution, which is a member of the 23-campus California State University system. California State University, East Bay was established in 1957 and now enrols almost 14,000 students. It had 863 faculty members as of the fall of 2021, and 358 of them (or 41%) were tenure-track. With additional campus locations in the surrounding cities of Oakland and Concord, Hayward is home to the university's largest and oldest college campus.

The Pioneer is the name of the weekly newspaper that is published by the university's Department of Communications. Pioneer Pete is the school mascot.
