About

The Royal Military College was established in 1874 by the Dominion Government, led by Alexander Mackenzie, who passed an act in Parliament to establish a military college "for the purpose of providing a complete education in all branches of military tactics, fortification, engineering, and general scientific knowledge in subjects connected with and necessary to a thorough knowledge of the military profession." The Military College of Canada welcomed the inaugural class of eighteen officer cadets on June 1, 1876. On June 1, 2026, RMC will mark the sesquicentennial anniversary of its founding.

The "Royal Military College of Canada Degrees Act, 1959," approved by the 25th Ontario Legislature and given Royal Assent on March 26, 1959, authorizes the College to award degrees in Arts, Science, and Engineering. RMC presently offers a wide range of programs in these three areas at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, both on campus and through remote learning.

The graduates of RMC have developed a reputation of service and success around the world out of all proportion to their numbers. RMC graduates have distinguished themselves in all facets of Canadian military service, from the North West Campaign of 1885 through the South African War, the First and Second World Wars, Korea, the Persian Gulf, and the most recent peacekeeping missions. Ex-cadets have also been prominent in a wide range of civilian occupations.
