The Arthur Sifton administration established Mount Royal University on December 16, 1910, and it was formally inaugurated on September 8, 1911. The college, which was first known as "Mount Royal College," was the idea of Calgary Reverend George W. Kerby (1860–1944), who wanted to provide young people from rural homes in the area with a chance for higher education. Bill 48, An Act concerning the Calgary College, was the name of the provincial charter that R. B. Bennett submitted to the assembly; however, Premier Sifton, Kerby, and others agreed that Calgary would not be the name of the new college.
As Mount Royal Junior College (MRC), Mount Royal became a post-secondary institution in 1931 and began providing transfer courses to the University of Alberta and eventually the University of Calgary. Mount Royal relocated in 1972 from a number of structures in downtown Calgary to a new campus in Lincoln Park, which was built on property formerly used as an air force base. Alumni of Mount Royal who have volunteered for active duty in the Canadian Forces are honoured on a war memorial honour roll.
The provincial government gave Mount Royal University university status in 2009. At the moment, the institution has 32 majors, 12 degrees, and an average class size of 29 people.
In 2017, Mount Royal University received the Ashoka Changemaker Campus accreditation, joining 44 other institutions of higher learning that are setting the standard for changemaking and social innovation.
