The Vice-Chancellor and University Council are advised by the Academic Board on matters affecting academic excellence. It serves as a platform for discussion and information inside the University and is in charge of setting policies regarding things like admissions, evaluation, instruction, student behaviour, research, scholarships, academic appointments, and advancement.

The Academic Board of La Trobe University is composed of about 100 members and is governed by the La Trobe University Act, the Academic Board Statute, and the Academic Board Regulations.

Every effort is made to ensure that the Board has an equal representation of male and female members, as well as regional and urban areas. Additionally, the Board has six elected student representatives who represent graduate and undergraduate students from both regional and urban universities.
