Ravenshaw is the oldest higher education college in Odisha and one of the oldest higher education institutes in India. It began in 1868 at the Cuttack Zilla (District) School with intermediate-level (F. A.) studies (now Ravenshaw Collegiate School). In 1876, the high school, also known as the Cuttack High School, was upgraded to the status of a first-year college. It was popularly known as Cuttack College until it was renamed Ravenshaw College in honor of T. E. Ravenshaw, the Commissioner of Cuttack Division who was instrumental in its establishment. Ravenshaw College and Ravenshaw Collegiate School split their offices in 1904.

The Nathan Committee chose the current Ravenshaw location as the site for the College in 1913. According to folklore, it was a lonely and dangerous region. Yet, newspaper articles from the period describe Chakra Padia as the favored location for festivals and sports by the English personnel in Cuttack. a big deal of time and a great deal of money.

If colonial policy interventionism in nineteenth-century Odisha was characterized by a strategic shift in favor of the spread of "modern" education and "development" by creating a university like Ravenshaw in the wake of a devastating famine in 1866, the "expressivist" signs of the institution in the first half of the twentieth century were marked by a subversive spirit of anti-colonialism infused with a radical libertarian ideological position.

Orissa Education Fund, Oriya People's Association, Sonepur State Peace Medals Fund, Domicile Orissa, Medallions for the Great War Commemoration, Second War loan, and Song of British Victory were just a few of the organizations that used Ravenshaw as a unique critical site to negotiate modernity from a variety of perspectives in the early decades of the 20th century. The students engaged in an intense discussion about broad and varied themes related to geography, language, identity and community, country, and the new global order.

Ravenshaw College underwent several phases of expansion and transformation with regard to infrastructure and facilities and teaching and research Ravenshaw in 1917; Board of Studies-1919; Syndicate; Governing body. This occurred amidst its intimate engagements and negotiations with the colonial order University Company; Provincial Publicity Department.
