One of India's oldest and most prestigious universities is the University of Mumbai, formerly known as the University of Bombay.
It was one of the first three universities to be formed in India, and it was founded in 1857 as a result of "Wood's Education Dispatch". According to a notification issued by the Government of Maharashtra and published in the Government Gazette on September 4, 1996, the name of the university has been changed from "University of Bombay" to "University of Mumbai" in response to the city's name change from Bombay to Mumbai. The University received two grades from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council: "A" in April 2012 and "5 stars" in 2001. (NAAC).
