Formally announced on November 17, 2000, the Maharashtra Animal & Fishery Sciences University (MAFSU) was created on December 3, 2000, in accordance with State Act No. 1998 (MAH.XVII of 1998), with its administrative headquarters in Nagpur. The University was created by combining five veterinary colleges, one postgraduate institute of veterinary & animal sciences, and one dairy technology college from the state's four agriculture universities. Despite the University's youth, its founding colleges were highly established.
In December 2000, the university established two new Fishery Colleges in Nagpur and Udgir and one Dairy Technology College in Udgir. This followed the establishment of five Veterinary Colleges, one Post Graduate Institute of Veterinary & Animal Sciences, and one Dairy Technology College at various geographic locations throughout the state. The university has a well-developed Students Welfare Section, University Library, Bio-informatics Center, and training and placement facilities in addition to ten colleges in three faculties, the director of instruction, the director of research, and the director of extension education. The University intends to start and organise research projects with the other Universities and institutions of ICAR using the new principles of research and extension responsibilities.
Each college has a number of highly developed and specialised departments, such as the first veterinary nuclear medicine centre in India (VNMC) in Mumbai, the laboratories for embryo transfer technology and mineral and hormonal assays in Akola, and the swine fever surveillance centre in Nagpur, among others. The University receives its primary financial assistance from the State Government's Annual Grants to cover its salary costs as well as ongoing and one-time costs associated with plan and non-plan disciplines. Being a State Agriculture University, the University also receives significant financial support from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research in the form of development grants (SAU). The DBT, DSIR, MoFPI, DST, NABARD, and pharmaceutical corporations sponsor the research initiatives.
