Despite being blessed with abundant natural resources, the Konkan region has largely remained undeveloped. This gave rise to the distinctive social issue of the migration of physically fit and skilled men to surrounding cities like Mumbai and Pune in search of work, leaving behind elderly people, women, and children to manage agriculture in the conventional manner using the most archaic methods of farming.
Due to its unique agroclimatic conditions, soil types, terrain, location between the Sahyadri hills and the Arabian Sea, crops and cropping patterns, land holdings, and socioeconomic conditions of the farmers, the Konkan region is distinguishable from the rest of Maharashtra State. As a result, the issues in the agricultural sector and related industries are also wholly unique from those in the other regions of Maharashtra. Due to this distinction, the Maharashtra government established the Konkan Krishi Vidyapeeth on May 18, 1972, with the goals of educating the populace, doing research on issues particular to the region, and disseminating improved crop production techniques. On February 12th, 2001, the university's name was changed to Dr. Balasaheb Sawant Konkan Krishi Vidyapeeth, Dapoli.
