In the NIRF-2021 ranking of Engineering Institutes, IIEST, Shibpur (formerly "Bengal Engineering College") is placed 27th. In 2014, it was the first college in India to be designated as an Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST). It is India's third engineering institution, based on its founding year of 1856. It is divided into 16 divisions and eight schools. It features more than 250 faculty members and around 4000 students.


Shibpur's IIEST is a centre for advanced learning and research. Producing high-quality engineers, scientists, and entrepreneurs who are equipped with the latest technologies, as well as providing innovative technology solutions for the benefit of society, are among the main activities.

The college's alumni hold leadership positions in a variety of national and international organisations. The government of India designated the college as a "Deemed University" in 1992, and the university was established in 1993.

Bengal Engineering and Science University, Shibpur was taken over by the Indian government in March 2014, and it was renamed Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur after being turned into an Institute of National Importance by an act of parliament.
