The Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology, Nagpur, formerly known as the Visvesvaraya Regional College of Engineering (VRCE), was founded in 1960 and named after the country's great engineer, planner, and statesman, Sir M.Visvesvaraya.

The college began operations in 1960 from a camp office on the grounds of the Government Polytechnic, Sadar, Nagpur, and later acquired a 214-acre site to house a separate Regional Engineering College at its current location.

Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology was granted Deemed to be University status in 2002, and on August 15, 2007, VNIT Nagpur was designated as an Institute of National Importance.
