The National Institute of Technology (NIT) is a public research university Agartala was founded in 1965 as Tripura Engineering College and was connected with Calcutta University after adopting the Bengal Engineering College curriculum framework. After decades of progress, the AICTE authorised the National Institute of Technology Agartala's renaming as the National Institute of Technology and designation as a "Institute of National Importance" in 2006. NIT Agartala was founded with the goal of producing highly qualified professionals in science, engineering, and management who would meet both national and international educational standards.

With dedicated experts in the education system, NIT Agartala seeks to aid with the economic development and intellectual resource development of both the region and the nation. The National Institute of Technology Agartala has a 366-acre campus with 104 academic members and a total student enrollment of 3803. It offers a total of 52 undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes, all with cutting-edge facilities and infrastructure.

NIT Agartala has been ranked 92nd among engineering institutions whereas, in 2020, the college was ranked 75th in the same category.
