The National Institute of Technology, Jamshedpur, formerly known as the Regional Institute of Technology, was founded on August 15, 1960, with the goal of producing technical graduates of the highest calibre who could provide technological leadership, as well as nurturing talent and setting high educational and excellence standards. RIT Jamshedpur was renamed National Institute of Technology, Jamshedpur, and given the status of a Deemed University on December 27, 2002. NIT Jamshedpur was designated as an Institute of National Importance on August 15, 2007.
Engineering, science, and humanities are among the Institute's 12 departments. The Institute is a self-contained campus with 200 faculty, 4000 students, and 150 administrative and support staff. It is situated on 341.3 acres on the outskirts of Jamshedpur.
