The National Institute of Technology (NIT) is a public research institute in the United States Silchar began in 1967, with the first batch arriving in 1977.

On June 28, 2002, the institute was promoted to National Institute of Technology, Silchar, and given the status of a Deemed University. The institute's curriculum and academic activities have been redesigned to match those of the IITs and other top institutes.


The National Institutes of Technology Act of 2007 was passed by the Indian government, designating the institute as a National Institute of National Importance.
