The Punjab Government established the Maharaja Ranjit Singh Punjab Technical University (MRSPTU), Bathinda (previously known as the Maharaja Ranjit Singh State Technical University, Bathinda), pursuant to Punjab Act No. 5 of 2015, which was published in the Punjab Government Gazette-Extraordinary (Regd. No. CHD/0092/2015-2017) notification No. 5- Leg./2015 on February 12, 2015, and registered with the UGC under Section 2 of the Higher Education Act (f).
There is an urgent need for the establishment of a new State Technical University due to the sudden increase in demand for quality technical education, mounting pressure on Punjab Technical University, Kapurthala, the state's premier technical university, to address regional imbalances in the distribution of institutions offering this education, and the rapid socioeconomic development of the Malwa region.
As a result of the execution of this Act, technical institutes from eleven districts in Punjab—Barnala, Bathinda, Faridkot, Fatehgarh Sahib, Fazilka, Ferozepur, Mansa, Moga, Patiala, Sangrur, and Sri Muktsar Sahib—have been affiliated with MRSPTU as of July 1st, 2015.
The new Bathinda Technical University's goals are to deliver, advance, and promote high-quality technical education, training, and research in order to foster entrepreneurship and a supportive environment for technical education pursuits in close collaboration with business. The University must uphold the highest standards in its quest of excellence in teaching, research, and skill development by adhering to the rules and regulations established by the University Grants Commission in New Delhi and the All India Council for Technical Education in New Delhi.
The University is expected to generate and maintain resources as a result of the aforementioned efforts through consultancy services, testing services, continuing education programmes, national and international collaborations, memorandums of understanding, the transfer of intellectual property rights, etc. In the eleven districts of Punjab that fall within its purview, MRSPTU will provide for the needs of quality technical education. New M.Tech. and Ph.D. programmes will begin in the 2016–17 school year. Four PG Certificate Courses in Pharmacy at Affiliated Colleges and new skill development certificate programmes in nine engineering disciplines are also being planned for the constituent colleges of the university.
