About

The second of the ten Sikh Gurus was Guru Angad Dev Ji (31 March 1504–29 March 1552). His birth name was Lehna, and he was born into a Hindu family in the village of Harike (now Sarae Naga, close to Muktsar) on the northwest Indian subcontinent. Bhai Lehna was raised in a Khatri family (Kshatriya, historically warriors), and although he himself worked as a pujari (priest) and religious instructor focused on the goddess Durga, his father was a small-scale trader. He became a Sikh after meeting Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism. He spent a long time assisting Guru Nanak and working with him. Bhai Lehna was given the name Angad by Guru Nanak, who also picked Angad above his own sons to be the second Sikh Guru.

Guru Angad oversaw Sikh heritage following Guru Nanak's death in 1539. In Sikhism, he is revered for incorporating the Tankre of the Himalayan area, an existing Indo-European character, into the Gurmukhi alphabet and formalising it. He added 62 or 63 of his own songs when he started the process of compiling Nanak's hymns. He selected a Vaishnava Hindu named Amar Das to succeed him as the third Guru of Sikhism rather than his own son.
