The Legislature of the State of Punjab approved an Act establishing Baba Farid University of Health Sciences in July 1998. The university's goal is to open a window to the outside world for the country's health professionals, planners, managers, social and biomedical scientists, and educators by creating an intellectual, academic, and physical environment that fosters free exchange of ideas and information between the university's faculties and with other universities of health sciences both domestically and abroad. The Punjab government established the Baba Farid Memorial Trust in July 1998 through an Act of the State Legislature. The Punjab Government is to be credited for establishing it; it is the fifth of its kind in India and the first in Northern India. The lack of qualified health professionals (both in quantity and quality) made the need urgent. A university of this type is anticipated to be a "Pace-setter" in the creation of suitable modes & models of healthcare. The university is dedicated to offering community-focused, need-based training programmes for health professionals.
