The Government of India and the Government of Rajasthan founded Malaviya Regional Engineering College in Jaipur in 1963. On June 26, 2002, the institution was designated as a National Institute of Technology, and on August 15, 2007, it was designated as an Institute of National Importance by Act of Parliament, with over 12,000 students having already graduated.

The campus is artistically laid-out with a scenic setting with modern architecture and natural beauty, comprising of institute buildings with accomodation for faculty, staff, and students, spread over 317 acres of lush greenery. The campus has everything a community needs, including staff clubs, a hospital, a bank, a post office, a community centre, a school, staff apartments, a gymnasium, playing fields, guest houses, 24 hour internet access, and a restaurant.
