Swami Keshwanand, after whom the RAU has been renamed Swami Keshwanand Rajasthan Agricultural University, Bikaner (SKRAU, Bikaner) by Gazette notification No. F. 4 (2) vidhi/ 2/ 2009 dated June 09, 2009, was born in the year 1883 in the village Magloona in the Sikar district of present-day Rajasthan. Birama was his given name. The famine of 1899 caused the 16-year-old Birama to flee the desert and relocate to Punjab in quest of work. In 1904 he became a sanyasi and was admitted into the Udasin sect, driven by an unfathomable spiritual search. He began his studies at the Sadhu Ashram Fazilka.
At the Ashram, he learnt Hindi and Sanskrit, as well as the Devanagari and Gurmukhi scripts. At the Kumbha Mela in Prayag in 1905, Mahatma Hiranandji Avadhut bestowed the new name "Swami Keshwanand" to Birama.
Swami Keshwanand had a multifaceted life as a freedom warrior, educator, Hindi propagator, and social reformer.
