The Rajasthani government has given significant attention to developing agricultural education, research, and extension in the state because it recognises how important agricultural growth and development is in ensuring the livelihood security of its population. SKN College of Agriculture in Jobner was the first agricultural college to be founded in the State. The Rajasthan College of Agriculture was founded at Udaipur later, in 1955. Rajasthan state held the distinction of being the second in establishing of Agricultural Universities in the country in 1962 after the first Agricultural University was established at Pantnagar in 1960 on the model of Land Grant Universities of the USA. Additionally, it recognised the U.S.A.'s land grant educational model, which combines teaching, research, and extension education into a trinity of functions.
While many other states took a while, the government made the audacious choice to shift the research component to the university. In 1964, the institution quickly underwent a multi-faculty conversion. Later, the Sukhadia University in Udaipur was divided into two independent Agricultural Universities, one of which was founded in Bikaner in 1987. The Rajasthan Agricultural University, Bikaner's constituent colleges were the Udaipur-based associated colleges that were chosen.
The second agricultural university in the state, Maharana Pratap University of Agriculture and Technology, Udaipur (MPUAT), originally known as the Agricultural University, Udaipur, was established on November 1, 1999, following the division of the Rajasthan Agricultural University, Bikaner, pursuant to Government of Rajasthan Ordinance No. 6 of 1999, which was later made into an Act in May 2000.
This has been done in light of the enormous physiographic variation in the largest state in the nation, including crops, cropping patterns, climate, soil factors, etc. Additionally, it was challenging to administer the mandated role of teaching, research, and extension activities through a single university in the state. Additionally, it gives location-specific programmes more suited to the tribal belt, particularly for the southern Rajasthan, a new boost. Beginning on December 1, 1999, the University was fully operational.
Agricultural Research Stations (ARSs), Agricultural Research Sub Stations (ARSSs), Livestock Research Stations (LRS), Dryland Farming Research Stations (DFRS), and Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) located throughout seven districts in the southern and southern-eastern regions of the state of Rajasthan fall under the purview of the university. Udaipur, Rajsamand, Dungarpur, Banswara, Chittorgarh, Bhilwara, and Pratapgarh are among these districts.
