As a result of the tireless efforts of a group of committed educators including Rev. Canon A.W. Davis, Munshi Narain Prasad Asthana, Dr. L.P. Mathur, Lala Dewan Chand, Rai Bahadur Anand Swaroop, and Dr. Brajendra Swaroop, the foundation of Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar University (originally known as Agra University) was laid on July 1st, 1927.
With 14 connected colleges and 2530 students, 1475 of whom were from the United Provinces of Agra, Central India, and Rajputana, the university's original territorial authority included these regions. The University once just had the Arts, Sciences, Commerce, and Law faculties. Subsequent additions included the faculties of medicine (1936), agriculture (1938), home science (1980), basic sciences (1981), fine arts (1982), and management (1994).
The quest of excellence and consistent commitment to high standards in terms of knowledge transmission and research promotion are defining characteristics that have a significant impact on the education provided by academic institutions. The University has worked hard over the past 83 years to continue embracing these lofty ideals, building rich traditions and earning the respect of the intellectual community in the process. A real contribution to higher education in northern India has been made by universities. The University has made an effort to uphold the age-old principle of incorporating moral and ethical values into teaching. Academicians have been assiduously working to improve the University's content and curriculum in order to instil these fundamental ideals in its pupils.
As of 24.09.1995, Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar University, Agra was known as The Agra University, Agra (U.P. Govt. Notification No. 33/XVII-V-1-1(ka)-43-1996, dated 06.01.1996). Agra, Aligarh, Mainpuri, Hathras, Firozabad, Etah, and Mathura are the seven districts of the Agra Division that the university today serves in terms of educational needs. The University is also honoured to be connected with Sarojini Naidu Medical College, one of the oldest and most prestigious medical schools in the nation. Currently, the university has 15 residential institutes scattered among its four residential campuses—Paliwal Park, Khandari, Civil Lines, and Chhaleshar—and approximately 200 associated colleges. Additionally, this university is affiliated with homoeopathic colleges around the U.P. state.
The university is rapidly expanding as a hub for cutting-edge research, higher-level scientific education, and vocational training. The university wants to advance education and establish itself as an international and national hub of excellence. The mission of the university goes beyond merely providing high-quality instruction; it also includes gratifying the students' burning desire to develop their intellectual curiosity and learning style. The university is working hard to live up to its motto, "Tamso Ma Jyotirgamay," which means "moving from darkness to light."
