By its regulation No. 1192/fifteen-10-46(6)-1975 dated 04 March 1975, the government of Uttar Pradesh founded Avadh University, Ayodhya, initially as an affiliating university and named Prof.(Dr.) Surendra Singh as the first Vice Chancellor. In honour of the late Dr. Rammanohar Lohia, a legendary socio-economic idealist and freedom warrior, it was renamed Dr. Rammanohar Lohia Avadh University, Ayodhya in 1993-1994.
In the beginning, the university's office was located in a leased building in Civil Lines, Ayodhya. The formal office's land acquisition process began in 1976. Ultimately, on May 2, 1978, the current varsity administrative building's foundation was laid by the state's governor and then-chancellor, Shri G.D. Tapase.
In April 1984, the university changed into an affiliating cum residential institution. With the introduction of four PG departments on campus—History, Culture & Archaeology, Economics & Rural Development, Mathematics & Statistics, and Physics & Electronics—the residential segment became operational. In 1993–1994 the university acquired four new departments: M.B.A., Biochemistry, Microbiology, and Environmental Sciences. This led to the university receiving recognised under the U.G.C.'s 12B programme.
The Institute of Engineering & Technology was founded on the site in 2000–2001 and offers M.C.A. and B.Tech. courses in mechanical engineering, information technology, computer science, and electronics & communication engineering. To broaden the academic scope of the residential setting, additional courses including M.C.J., M.S.W., B.Lib., and M.Lib. were also added that same year. Additionally, a number of PG programmes, including M.Sc. in Biotechnology, M.T.A., M.P.Ed., and M.Ed., as well as UG programmes, including B.B.A., B.C.A., and B.P.Ed., started operating on campus in the 2005–06 academic year. Five new courses were introduced by the university for the 2017–18 academic year.
