As a fully accredited state university, Banda University of Agriculture and Technology holds the distinction of being the "First Agricultural University of the Bundelkhand Region." The University was formed on March 2nd, 2010, in accordance with the Uttar Pradesh Agriculture University Act (Sanshodhan) 1958 Gazette-Adhiniyam, which was announced by Government Order No. 301/79-V-1-10-1 (Ka) 27-2009 Lucknow. Its original name was "Manyawar Shri Kanshiram Ji University of Agriculture and Technology, Banda," but that was changed by the Uttar Pradesh Agriculture University Act (Sanshodhan) Adhiniyam, 2014, No. 1528(2)/LXXIX-V-1-14-1(Ka)-13-2014 on December 4, 2014 to "Banda University of Agriculture and Technology, Banda."

The university was founded to promote the growth of the agricultural and related industries throughout the state of Uttar Pradesh, but especially in the Bundelkhand region. It is dedicated to serving the Bundelkhand region with the trinity concept, i.e. full integration of teaching, research, and extension for the development of agriculture and related sectors to assure food security and improve socio-economic status of locals. The University is responsible for (a) developing human resources, (b) creating and perfecting technologies, and (c) disseminating such technologies to farmers, orchardists, and dairy producers in the divisions of Chitrakoot Dham and Jhansi. In contrast to Jhansi, the Chirtrakoot Dham Division consists of four districts: Banda, Chitrakoot (Karvi), Mahoba, and Hamirpur. Banda, Chitrakoot (Karvi), Mahoba, and Hamirpur make up the four districts that make up the Chirtrakoot Dham Division, whereas Jhansi, Lalitpur, and Jalaun (Orai) districts make up the Jhansi Division.
