The Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines), established under the Institute of Technology Act, 1961, is governed by the IIT Council, the apex body of the Government of India, which is chaired by Honourable Minister of State for External Affairs.
The fully residential IIT(ISM) is located in the coking coal belt, 260 kilometres from Kolkata, on a 393-acre campus (with 218 acres of current campus and 175 acres under purchase and development). It has all of the amenities of a world-class academic institute. What began as a mining education school has grown into a full-fledged technical institution with a worldwide reputation, offering a variety of programmes such as B. Tech., M. Tech., M. Sc. Tech., and MBA.
