In 2019, the institute celebrated its 100th anniversary. We now want to carry on the heritage with renewed enthusiasm, unwavering determination, and a dedication to nation-building. The first residential university of modern India, Banaras Hindu University (BHU), founder Bharat Ratna Mahamana Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya, who foresaw the crucial role of technical education in bolstering independent India, is responsible for the existence of the Indian Institute of Technology (Banaras Hindu University) Varanasi. The founding of Banaras Engineering College in 1919 marked the beginning of engineering education in BHU (BENCO). The College of Technology (TECHNO) and the College of Mining & Metallurgy were established during the following phase of growth (MINMET).
The Institute of Technology was created in 1968 by the merger of BENCO, MINMET, and TECHNO, the former engineering faculties of BHU (IT-BHU). Since 1972, IT-BHU has admitted students through the JEE test that is administered by the IITs. The former IT-BHU frequently placed among the nation's best engineering schools. By an Act of Parliament, IT-BHU changed its name to IIT (BHU) Varanasi on June 29, 2012. The Institute immediately created procedures and practises in accordance with IIT standards after becoming an IIT.
