In July 1854, the East India Company's Court of Directors sent a despatch to the Governor-General of India in Council proposing the establishment of universities in Calcutta, Madras, and Bombay.
On JANUARY 24, 1857, the University of Calcutta was established in response to that dispatch.
In the beginning, the University followed the pattern of the University of London and gradually modified its constitution.
