Sanskrit College was founded during the British government on the advice of HT James Prinsep and Thomas Babington Macaulay.John Paskal Larkins Esquire, a scholar of oracular knowledge, placed the first foundation stone of the institution in 1824 under the sponsorship of Rt. Honorable William Pit Amherst. H.H. Wilson, the Secretary to the former British Government, played a key role in founding this institution to teach ancient literature, philosophy, Hindu law, grammar, Indian culture, and to encourage Sanskrit learning among British officials and Indians.Since its beginning, the institution has continued to disseminate the light of knowledge and currently exists as a legacy institute and a renowned educational organization in the country.

Pandit Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar, E.B. Cowell, Pt. Haraprasad Shastri, S. N. Dasgupta, Pt. Joyagopal Tarkalankar, M.M. Pt. Mahesh Chandra Nayaratna, Pt. Satish Chandra Vidybhushan, Pt. Taranath Vacspati, Pt. Even after 188 years, the college still stands tall and specializes in the scholarship of Indian Tradition, Oriental Philosophy, and Religion, with undergraduate programs in Sanskrit (both formal and TOL system), Pali, Linguistics, Ancient Indian and World History, Bengali, and English. Postgraduate students are also taught Sanskrit.

The institution has a distinguished and renowned library with over 2 lakh books and over 20000 manuscripts, some of which are rare. The library is well-known for its historical significance and is regularly visited by researchers and academicians from all over the world for research purposes.

During Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar's Principalship, the university soared to popularity and distinction. The institution began welcomed non-Brahmin students in 1851.  Pandit Mahesh Chandra Nayaratna Bhattacharya C.I.E. was instrumental in resurrecting the "Tol" system in Sanskrit education and introducing the tradition of titles or "Upadhis."
