Bengal was split. The era was frantic.

It was necessary to question the British establishment's hegemony. With the situation having changed, education had to take on a new function. It had to take on a new form of resistance so that the burgeoning nationalist ideology could be spread. The National Council of Education (NCE) was established with this in mind.

Its main objective was to provide literature, science, and technical education on a strictly national scale under national authority. to become independent through education. The generosity of people like Raja Subodh Chandra Mallik, Brajendra Kishore Roychowdhury of Gouripur, Sir Rash Behari Ghosh (the first President of the NCE), poet Rabindranath Tagore, and Sri Aurobindo Ghosh allowed for the establishment of the NCE.

Bengal Technical Institute, subsequently known as College of Engineering and Technology, Bengal, was overseen by the Society for the Promotion of Technical Education in Bengal until 1910, when it was merged with NCE. The Bengal College of Engineering and Technology, which by 1940 was essentially operating as a university, was now under the care of NCE. After India gained its independence, the West Bengali government passed the required laws to launch Jadavpur University on December 24, 1955, with the support of the Indian government.
