The Indian Institute of Information Technology, Design & Manufacturing, Kurnool (IIITDMK) was established in 2014 and began its academic programme in August 2015 on the Kancheepuram campus with the cooperation of its mentor institute, IIITDM Kancheepuram. On August 3, 2017, IIITDM Kurnool was designated as an Institute of National Importance. In 2015, the Andhra Pradesh government set aside 151 acres in Kurnool for the construction of a permanent campus.

The IIITDM Kurnool campus is positioned away from the hustle and bustle of the city, providing the ideal environment for cultivating the calm frame of mind essential for research, learning, and other activities. The campus is located on a hill that overlooks the city of Kurnool. The strong winds that blow over the Tungabhadra river give the campus an atmosphere akin to that of a hill station.
