Dr. T.S. Soundaram and Dr. G. Ramachandran developed the institute. The Gandhigram Rural Institute of Higher Education was founded in 1956 to carry on Mahatma Gandhi’s ‘Nai Talim’ system of education. In 1976 it was declared as Deemed University, by University Grants Commission (UGC), New Delhi, Under Section 3 of UGC Act 1956. It is fully funded by UGC.

In 2006 it was renamed Gandhigram Rural Institute as per the guidelines of UGC. [clarification needed]

With devotion to Mahatma Gandhi's revolutionary concept of ‘Nai Talim’ system of education, Gandhigram Rural Institute has developed academic programmes in Rural Development, Rural Economics and Extension Education, Rural Oriented Sciences, Cooperation, Development Administration, Rural Sociology, English and Foreign Languages, and, Tamil and Indian Languages.

  • Aspirants seeking admission to the 3 year Full-time B.Sc. Hons. program should satisfy the following criteria as defined by the institute.

ACADEMIC REQUIREMENT

The candidate must have passed Higher Secondary exams or its equivalent with a minimum of 50% marks (45% for SC and a pass for ST) in each subject under Part III belonging to either of the following groups:

  • Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology Group II: Physics, Chemistry, Biology with a fourth (optional) science course.
  • Physics, chemistry, botany, and zoology are the four sciences.

A pass in Higher Secondary exams or its equivalent, with a minimum of 60% marks in Biology and Agricultural Practices, as well as practical papers (55% for SC and ST).

  • Aspirants seeking admission to the three-year full-time Ph.D. program should satisfy the following criteria, as stipulated by the institute.

ACADEMIC REQUIREMENT 

  • Candidates (Indian / Foreigner) who have studied under the 10+2+3+2 years or 10+2+5 years or 11+1+3+2 years or 11+1+3+3 or 10+2+4+2 pattern of education and qualified for the award of the Master's Degree in the relevant discipline at Gandhigram Rural Institute (Deemed to be University) (GRI-DU) or any other university recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) with not less than 55% marks. For those who are SC/ST/OBC, a 5% mark reduction from 55% to 50%, or an equal grade reduction, will be permitted.
  • Candidates must pass the GRI entrance exam in accordance with the conditions outlined in section 5 of this rule.

  • Aspirants seeking admission to 4 Year Full-time B.Tech Program should have passed in Higher Secondary examinations or its equivalent with a minimum 45% marks taken together in Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry (40% in case of candidates belonging to SC/ST).
