Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya, formerly known as the University of Indore, was founded in 1964 by an act of the Madhya Pradesh legislature. In 1964, Dr. Zakir Hussain, India's vice president at the time, officially opened the university. The university's purview was restricted to the Indore district.
The institution was renamed "Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya" in 1988 to honour the Holkar Maharani "Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar" of the Maratha Empire. The university is known as Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya in Hindi since the word vishwavidyalaya means "university" in that language.
Its authority was widened to include the Indore division, which covers over seven districts, with the restructuring of the institutions.
On Rabindranath Tagore Marg in Indore, the university's main campus and administrative buildings are located. An extension campus that is under the direct administration of the university is the Takshashila Campus, located at 139, Khandwa Road, Indra Puri Colony, Indore, Madhya Pradesh 452001. All of the schools on the three sites are under the control of the university. The university's Indore branch is home to numerous other colleges. More than 300 linked institutions provide basic and professional education at the undergraduate and graduate levels through the university. Over 300,000 students attend colleges that are associated with the university, which has 9000 students on campus.
Academic classes are held at Takshila Parisar (the university's campus), which covers an area of 510 acres, and Avanti Parisar (campus), which covers an area of 154 acres. The university spans an area of 760 acres. With a 100-acre campus, Nalanda Parisar is used for official and administrative tasks.
Recently, the institution was subject to the provisions of Section 52 of the MP State Government Universities Act, and Vice Chancellor Narendra Dhakad was dismissed on grounds of flagrant mismanagement and allegations of corruption. In his place, Renu Jain has been named as the new Vice Chancellor.
