The University was founded on July 20, 1968, and received UGC recognition in February 1972. Both the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) and the All Commonwealth Association of Universities recognise it as a member (ACAU).
The University sits 5 kilometres north of Rewa City on a 246.20-acre tract of ground, with its campus situated on either side of Rewa-Sirmour Road. The University complex includes the Environmental Biology, Physics, Science, Humanities, and Ambedkar Bhawan (Hindi Department) departments, as well as the USIC, Central Library, Antarbharati, Arjun Chhatra Griha, Guest House, Yoga Hall Hostels for Boys and Girls, Auditorium, Stadium, and Staff Quarters. The University Campus, which is quaint and environmentally friendly and is located away from the rush of city life, sits at the foot of Vindhyas. The Campus recreates the atmosphere of bygone Ashrams. The residents still have access to all the modern conveniences and amenities, including a canteen, Xerox and STD facilities, as well as a small shopping center. The campus also includes a sizable gym, a yoga studio, a large stadium, and a Lord Shiva temple sandwiched between a modest park.
