In the month of June 1960, the Junagadh College of Agriculture began operations. From its founding till 1967, the college was a part of Gujarat University, Ahmedabad. The affiliation was subsequently moved to Saurashtra University when it was founded there in 1968.
The triple purpose of agricultural education, research, and extension education was mandated for the entire State when the Gujarat Agricultural University was founded in February 1972. The Gujarat Agricultural University is divided into four independent Agricultural Universities in the State by the Gujarat Agricultural University Act-2004 in order to strengthen these operations at the regional level. Among these, the Junagadh Agricultural University, which was established on May 1st, 2004, is one.
The university's ten districts—Amreli, Bhavnagar, Jamnagar, Junagadh, Porbandar, Rajkot, Surendranagar, Devbhoomi Dwarka, Gir Somnath, and Morbi—cover approximately 32.82 percent of the Gujarat State. These districts were once known as Saurashtra. The region has 788 km of sea coast that stretches from the Gulf in the northwestern direction via the Arabian Sea in the southern direction up to the Gulf of Cambay in the eastern direction. The climate at the institution is typical of the state's arid and semi-arid regions. So the main factors restricting the production and prosperity of this region's agriculture are drought, unpredictable rainfall, low fertility, and saline incursion.
The region's main agricultural products include oilseeds (groundnut, sesame, and castor), cotton, bajra, wheat, and spices. Mango and sapota are among the region's most popular fruits. Famous breeds of goat, cow (Gir), buffalo (Jafrabadi), and horse all originate from Saurashtra (Kathi).
Agriculture, horticulture, agricultural engineering, and agribusiness management are among the associated subjects taught at Junagadh Agricultural University. According to the capability of the various faculties, postgraduate level studies are also provided in agricultural and associated sciences.
In the city of Junagadh, the College of Agriculture was founded in 1960, and the College of Agricultural Engineering & Technology was founded there in 1984.
This institution oversees the polytechnic programmes in horticulture, agroprocessing in Junagadh, agriculture in Dhari, Halvad, and Sidsar, and agricultural engineering in Targhadia. This university also runs Mali trainings and certificate programmes in Junagadh in addition to these. This institution also manages ITI centres focused on agriculture in Junagadh and Mahuva, respectively.
Other facilities, such as a central library, round-the-clock Internet access, a sports complex, an auditorium, a gym, a health centre, etc., are also offered on this campus to give students a welcoming environment for the entire development of their personalities.
The institution has eleven sub-Research Stations/Testing Centers for the production of novel varieties/hybrids of crops, vegetables, and fruits, as well as seven multidisciplinary Main Research Stations, five Main Research Stations for different crops. These centres also produce production technology packages that are affordable, sustainable, and adaptable for newly created varieties and hybrids. The first hybrid castor and bajra were created by researchers at this university.
One Sardar Smruti Kendra (Junagadh), seven Krushi Vigyan Kendras (Jamnagar, Amreli, Targhadia, Khapat, Nana Kandhasar, Pipalia, and Morbi), a Center of Excellence of Training in Groundnut, a Center of Excellence on Soil-Water Management, and a T & V scheme are all included in the extension component.
Under extension education programmes, Khedut Shibir, Group Discussions, Farmers Services, Agro-Meteorological Advisory Services, Crop Demonstrations, Educational Tours, Seminars, Cattle Camps, and Film Shows are also organised for the transfer of agricultural and related technology. To introduce the new technology to the farmers, more than 648 front-line demonstrations were held in the peanut, castor, sesame, and pearl millet crops.
