The Gujarat University of Transplantation Sciences (GUTS), established in 2015 under the State University Act, is the first university in the world for transplantation and allied sciences. Prof. H.L. Trivedi, the Founding Director of Smt. Gulabben Rasiklal Doshi and Smt. Kamlaben Mafatlal Mehta Institute of Kidney Diseases & Research Centre - Dr. H.L. Trivedi Institute of Transplantation Sciences (IKDRC-ITS), Ahmedabad, Gujarat, had the idea to establish such a university in 1998. He planted the seed for its establishment.

Hon.'ble Chief Minister of Gujarat Smt. Anandiben Patel, a teacher at heart, and other government officials backed the plan wholeheartedly. The bill was overwhelmingly approved by the Gujarat Legislative Assembly on March 25, 2015. On April 6, 2015, H.E. Gujarat Governor Shri O.P. Kohliji signed the legislation, which was then published on April 7 in the Gujarat Government Gazette. The Department of Health and Family Welfare released the notification on April 29, 2015, and it became operational on May 1, 2015, the day Gujarat State was established. GUTS is a non-affiliating university that will eventually have component authorised or recognised colleges or institutions.
