About

Educated and civic-minded persons like Gandhiji, Sardar Patel, Acharya Anandshankar B. Dhruva, Dada Saheb Mavlankar, Kasturbhai Lalbhai, and many more had the idea for the Gujarat University in the 1920s. However, the University could not be founded until after independence was achieved. The University was established in 1949 "as a teaching and affiliating University" under the Gujarat University Act of the State Government. This was carried out as a step toward decentralising and reorganising university education in the era's Bombay Province.

Sardar Patel University, Saurashtra University, Bhavnagar University, South Gujarat University, Gujarat Ayurveda University, Gujarat Agricultural University, and North Gujarat University are just a few of the seven additional universities that have been founded during the course of the Gujarat University's more than five decades of existence. In spite of this, the Gujarat University, the state's largest university, serves the requirements of more than two lakh students dispersed across 235 colleges, 15 recognised institutes, and 24 approved institutions for higher education. There are 221 P.G. Centers and 34 Post-Graduate University departments.

At the undergraduate level, Gujarat University is an affiliating institution, while at the post-graduate level, it is a teaching institution. In fact, the University is legally responsible for post-graduate training, and as a result, a coordinated instruction plan has been developed under its direct administration and supervision to ensure effective and varied instruction. The system of external examinations in the Faculties of Arts and Commerce, both at the undergraduate and graduate levels, is a significant aspect of this university. In order to help working students and others who couldn't afford the exorbitant expense of a university education achieve their ambition, the external examinations were developed.

Gujarat University has grown remarkably over the past 67 years, becoming one of the top universities in the nation today. About two lakh students receive instruction there in one of the broadest ranges of specialties.
