About

Patna University is the sixth oldest university in India and the first in Bihar. It was established on October 1, 1917, by an Act of Legislature. The University was created as an examining body and administered tests ranging from matriculation to postgraduate studies. Its jurisdiction spanned Bihar, Orissa, and Nepal, and Patna University has been the arbiter of these areas' academic fate for the past forty years. The Patna University Act, 1951, gained the Honorable Governor's assent on July 6, 1951, with the goal of establishing a Teaching and Residential University in Patna.

According to the Act, the university's purpose and powers are to provide instruction in such disciplines of study as the university deems appropriate, including professional studies and technology, as well as to conduct research and to advance and disseminate knowledge. It was the only university in Bihar until January 1952, and it served as the evaluating body for educational institutions in Nepal until Tribhuvan University was established in Kathmandu. After the establishment of Utkal University, this university ceased to be the examining body for Orissa's institutions. Patna University's history reflects the history of modern Bihar's educational, cultural, political, and economic development.

It is the state's sole teaching and residential university with a truly national character that cuts over linguistic, cultural, political, and denominational lines. The outstanding personalities who led India's freedom struggle and have occupied or are currently occupying coveted academic, administrative, judicial, and political positions, as well as its renowned teachers and brilliant students, have all contributed significantly to the country's extraordinarily rich academic heritage.

Bihar has always been a center of learning. Famous universities such as Nalanda and Vikramshila once drew students, instructors, and researchers from all over Asia to its region.

After independence, higher education had to be marketed as a vital resource for economic advancement and social reform in order for the state to thrive and develop. At the time, it was thought that Patna University, with its excellent facilities, should focus more on scholarship, teaching, and research and relieve itself of the obligation of administering numerous state-level examinations. Patna University is comprised of ten constituent colleges: Patna College, Patna Science College, Bihar National College, Patna Law College, Magadh Mahila College, Patna Women's College, Vanijya Mahavidyalaya, College of Arts and Craft, Patna Training College, Patna Women's Training College, and thirty-one post-graduate departments in the faculties of Humanities, Social Science, Science, Education, Commerce, Law, and Management.

Most post-graduate departments are housed in Darbhanga Raj structures, which are part of the state's notable architectural legacy. Postgraduate departments are also conducted by Patna University constituent colleges such as Magadh Mahila College, Patna College, B.N. College, Patna Women's College, and Vanijya Mahavidyalaya.

These courses meet the growing public demand for postgraduate education. The University is in the process of rejuvenating its potential for success in order to give chances for students, researchers, and teachers to flourish in their subjects, as well as to form relationships with Indian and off-shore colleges to improve scholarship and technology transfer.

The UGC Academic Staff College, now known as the UGC Human Resource Development Centre, reminds the academic community of the need to update knowledge and improve teaching and communication skills through orientation and refresher courses, seminars, and workshops. The Central Library, located in the heart of the university campus, serves students, professors, and research scholars alike. The computerized library is linked to INFLIBNET. Users can access four hundred thousand books, eighty-seven periodicals, fifty thousand old issues of journals, and over five thousand rare manuscripts. In an age of information and communication technology, the frontiers of time and space are ever growing, and the University is in the process of preparing teachers and students with modern methodologies, skills, and knowledge to tackle a variety of professional difficulties.

Three of the ten constituent colleges are solely for female students, but the number of female students in the other co-educational institutions, including postgraduate departments, is relatively large. Patna University has always been sensitive to the requirements of students who are socially and economically underprivileged, as well as those who have special needs. It has rigorously adhered to the government's reserve policy, allowing them to put their rapid potential into tangible achievement.

Agencies such as the NSS, NCC, Sports and Cultural Activities Boards, and numerous learned Societies encourage co-curricular engagement and holistic development of students. Many of our students have excelled at the university, state, and national levels.
